School Day Information

Come be swept away with the medieval magic at the 31st Annual Hoggetowne Medieval Faire. The City of Gainesville’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs invites you to join us at this highly anticipated event which will be held at the Alachua County Fairgrounds and will enchant the Gainesville community for two consecutive weekends, January 28-29 & Febuary 3-5, 2017.

Friday, February 3 is School Day at the Faire and the Royal Gates will open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 3:00 p.m. Discount ticket prices are available for groups that pre-register in advance. Ticket prices are reduced on Friday, and school groups that pre-register receive a larger discount: $2 for students, and $5 per adult. Individuals with disabilities are admitted free. All pre-registered groups will receive a free 50-page Educational Guide that can be used to assist with classroom activities before and after the Faire. More than 5,000 students from 27 counties enjoy the Faire at the discounted price.

Come experience the colorful culture of a medieval village at festival time. The theme for the 2017 Hoggetowne Medieval Faire is “Eleanor of Aquitaine, Queen of Hearts.” The Tournament Field will host a stunning show of combat entertainment during a living chess match as one of history’s greatest queens defies the social constraints of her time and forges her own legend.

At the Faire, students and teachers can revel in the merriment of a bustling medieval marketplace where hundreds of talented artisans demonstrate their traditional wares. The marketplace will be filled with skilled artisans selling and demonstrating time-honored arts and crafts such as weaving, blacksmithing, jewelry making, carving, and woodworking. Artisans will sell medieval-themed goods, speak “in character”, and dress in authentic-looking garb.

Then cheer on armored knights as they joust on the Tournament Field. Visit nine stages of entertainment where the forgotten skills of full flight falconry, gripping aerial acrobatics and astonishing magic acts are brought back to life. Jugglers, musicians and dancers fill the streets and stages with continuous live revelry – a medley including gypsy dancing, ancient music, mystifying magic, knife throwing and fire eating.

Adding to the excitement of Hoggetowne is the human-powered push rides as well as camel, warhorse and pony rides. Play games of skill that challenge those of any age; shoot arrows, throw battle-axes, and find your way through the human maze. Enjoy all the delicacies of the Food Court where you will find hearty food fit for a King.
